Built in 1897 as the summer home of Howard Van Doren Shaw and his family, the Ragdale Foundation is now one of the North Shore’s most prized institutions. A retreat for artists of all kinds, Ragdale offers coveted residency placements to those whose applications are accepted. Artists such as Audrey Niffenegger, Wendy McClure, Jane Fulton Alt, and Lisa Kingsley count themselves amongst Ragdale alumni. Residents have called their experiences on the estate “life-changing,” “extraordinary,” and “indescribable.”
We spent the day communing with the spirits of those who have stayed before us—and chatting with the current resident fellows—as we roamed over the grounds and through the main house shooting our fall fashion story. The result was The Bloomsbury Set, which was inspired by another colony of fashionably eccentric artists, including Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster, Dora Carrington, and Lytton Strachey, among others. We hope you enjoy these pictures as much as we loved our day in the country.
