An Afternoon of Fair Trade Fashion

May 20th, 2013 by admin

Unique Fair Trade items will be showcased on at the Mustard Seed’s fourth annual Fashion Show Benefit in Lake Forest this Wednesday.

In addition to a chance to get a glimpse at one-of-a- kind pieces of clothing and jewelry from all around the world, attendees at the benefit—which will take place at the store–will also contribute to a great cause.

All proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to SowHope, a global organization that helps and inspires women living in extreme poverty by promoting wellness, education, and economic opportunities.

Convinced that this is a good cause, but still a little bit confused about what Fair Trade is?

Basically, it’s a socially conscientious way to shop. Artisans are paid fair, sustainable wages for their work so they are able to support their families, and work in safe and stable conditions.

At Mustard Seed, the proceeds are donated to help women and children both overseas and in the United States.
As one of the only independent fair trade gift shops on the North Shore, Mustard Seed’s entire sales staff is comprised of volunteers, and over 95 percent of their products are Fair Trade items.

Mustard Seed’s fourth annual Fashion Show Benefit is Wednesday, May 22 at 1 p.m. Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased at the boutique, located at 202 E Westminster Avenue in Lake Forest. For more information call 847-735-0211. –Hope Holmberg

City Picks: Roka Akor

May 16th, 2013 by admin

River North’s Roka Akor takes Japanese cuisine far beyond the bounds of standard sushi fare, now complimenting its self-proclaimed “open charcoal” cuisine with a new bar menu of worth-the-trip spring cocktails and small plates, created by Executive Chef Ce Bian and newly appointed mixologist Jason Huffman.

If you’re the sushi go-er who craves more than your roll’s worth of pickled ginger, freshen your palate with a copper mug of the Roka Mule, a homemade ginger beer spiced up with fresh raspberries and Sobieski vodka. Huffman’s personal recommendation, “A Farewell to Arms,” is a patio-perfect spring cocktail of Imbue Bittersweet Vermouth, Cocchi Torino, Mathilde Peche, ginger syrup, and fresh lime juice. My accompanying app recommendation? The Robata Grilled Bone Marrow on Sesame Nori Toast. Executive Chef Ce Bian’s small plates more-than-satisfy a full spectrum of after-work appetites, from three-bite Shrimp and Lobster Tacos with Scallop Ceviche to a Prime Filet with Chili Ginger sauce.

Available daily from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and again from 9:30 p.m. to close, enjoy the zesty spring bar menu of one of Bon Appetit’s Top 10 U.S. Sushi Spots.

Roka Akor is located at 456 N. Clark Street in Chicago. For more information, visit rokaakor.com –Abigail Mitchell

Put a Ring On It

May 15th, 2013 by admin

One hundred and one years after noted architect Howard Van Doren Shaw designed an outdoor garden theater for his wife, Frances – a stunning, contemporary reinterpretation of the Ragdale Ring returns to the artist residency in Lake Forest. In an international competition, New York-based, Harvard-educated Stephen Dietrich Lee’s proposal was selected for its dramatic and visionary design. Lee will be in residence at Ragdale to oversee the Ragdale Ring construction.

“Stephen Lee’s winning design blurs the distinction between art and architecture, creating a dialogue between the two disciplines,” says Zurich Esposito, executive vice president of the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), juror, and a member of Ragdale’s board of directors. “The structure will serve as a gathering place, reinvigorating the historic campus of Ragdale as a place of dynamic artistic and architectural experimentation.”

The design team was awarded a $10,000 production grant to fund the project and a design/build residency of up to six weeks. Construction on the temporary structure will begin May 16, with the public unveiling scheduled for a June 15 benefit at Ragdale. The unveiling will include open-air performances by nationally recognized musicians, dancers, actors, and poets.

The Ragdale Foundation is an internationally recognized, nonprofit, artist residency program that provides time and space for creativity to more than 150 artists, writers, and composers each year. Built in 1897, Ragdale is located on the grounds of Arts and Crafts architect Howard Van Doren Shaw’s summer home in Lake Forest. ragdale.org
